A Brief History of Rotterdam

The area that would become Rotterdam was first settled around 1661 by Dutch colonists who named the town after Rotterdam in the Netherlands, the city where many immigrants last touched European soil before journeying to the New World. These early settlers initially used the fertile land along the Mohawk River as outlying farmlands and wood lots while maintaining their homes within the protective stockade in nearby Schenectady. The rich soil and strategic location along the river made Rotterdam ideal for agriculture and trade.

When Schenectady incorporated as a city in 1798, the lands now known as Rotterdam became the city’s third ward. This arrangement continued when Schenectady County was chartered in 1809. However, the community’s distinct identity and growing population led to a petition for independence. On April 14, 1820, the final day of the legislative session, the New York State Legislature passed the act creating the town of Rotterdam as a separate municipality.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Rotterdam evolved from an agricultural community to a prosperous residential town. The opening of the Erie Canal transformed the region’s economy, allowing goods to be shipped efficiently along the waterways. The arrival of General Electric in neighboring Schenectady brought tremendous growth and opportunity, transforming Rotterdam into a desirable suburb. Historic properties like the Mabee House, built in the early 1700s and now the oldest surviving house in the Mohawk Valley, stand as testaments to the town’s deep roots.

In 1942, Rotterdam was established as a first class town and adopted the Old World Rotterdam coat of arms along with the motto “Sterker door Strijd” (Stronger through Effort). This motto continues to reflect the community’s resilience and forward-thinking spirit. Today, Rotterdam maintains its rich heritage while embracing modern development, creating a perfect balance between historical preservation and contemporary living.
